Modelling the amphibian chytrid fungus spread by connectivity analysis: towards a national monitoring network in Italy

چکیده
Abstract The emerging amphibian disease, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is driving population declines worldwide and even species extinctions in Australia, South Central America. In order to mitigate effects of Bd on populations, high-exposed areas should be identified at the local scale effective conservation measures planned national level. This assessment actually lacking Mediterranean basin, particular Italy, one most relevant diversity hotspots entire region. this study, we reviewed available information conducted a 5-year molecular screening 1274 individual skin swabs belonging 18 species. Overall, found presence 13 total 56 known occurrence locations for peninsular Italy Sardinia. We used these climate data model habitat suitability current future climatic scenarios. then employed electric circuit theory landscape permeability diffusion Bd, using resistance map. With procedure, were able model, first time, pathways scale, characterising main towards with high probability occurrence. Thus, six protected that will become pivotal nationally-based strategic plan monitor, possibly contrast Italy.

Amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in Cusuco National Park, Honduras.
Amphibian population declines in Honduras have long been attributed to habitat degradation and pollution, but an increasing number of declines are now being observed from within the boundaries of national parks in pristine montane environments. The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been implicated in these declines and was recently documented in Honduras from samples c...
متن کاملOrigin of the Amphibian Chytrid Fungus
The sudden appearance of chytridiomycosis, the cause of amphibian deaths and population declines in several continents, suggests that its etiologic agent, the amphibian chytrid Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, was introduced into the affected regions. However, the origin of this virulent pathogen is unknown. A survey was conducted of 697 archived specimens of 3 species of Xenopus collected from ...

15 صفحه اولAmphibian chytrid fungus and ranaviruses in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Pathogens can cause serious declines in host species, and knowing where pathogens associated with host declines occur facilitates understanding host-pathogen ecology. Suspected drivers of global amphibian declines include infectious diseases, with 2 pathogens in particular, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and ranaviruses, causing concern. We explored the host range and geographic distributi...
متن کاملSpread of Amphibian Chytrid Fungus across Lowland Populations of Túngara Frogs in Panamá
Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is an emergent infectious disease partially responsible for worldwide amphibian population declines. The spread of Bd along highland habitats (> 500 meters above sea level, m a.s.l.) of Costa Rica and Panamá is well documented and has been linked to amphibian population collapses. In contrast, data are scarce o...
